Embedding transition-metal atoms in graphene: structure, bonding, and magnetism.
We present a density-functional-theory study of transition-metal atoms (Sc-Zn, Pt, and Au) embedded in single and double vacancies (SV and DV) in a graphene sheet. We show that for most metals, the bonding is strong and the metal-vacancy complexes exhibit interesting magnetic behavior. In particular, an Fe atom on a SV is not magnetic, while the Fe@DV complex has a high magnetic moment. Surpris...
متن کاملCalculation of Transition Metal Compounds Using an Extension of the CNDO-Formalism II. Metal to Metal Bonding in Binuclear Transition Metal Compounds
A recently developed extension of the CNDO-method is used to study the electronic structure of a number of binuclear transition metal carbonyls and carboxylates with fourfold or quasi-fourfold symmetry. The results are compared to those available from nonempirical calculations. Special attention is paid to the nature of the metal-metal bond. Connections with qualitative MO-considerations allow ...

متن کاملVarious bonding configurations of transition-metal atoms on carbon nanotubes: Their effect on contact resistance
Our investigations reveal that the bonding of the transition-metal atoms on a single-wall carbon nanotube ~SWCN! depends on the detailed contact conditions. On the basis of our results, we suggest that the early 3-d elements ~Sc, Ti, and V! can be expected to be good candidates for making metal–SWCN contacts of low resistance, while contacts employing the late 3-d elements ~Fe, Co, and Ni! and ...
متن کاملChemical bonding and aromaticity in trinuclear transition-metal halide clusters.
Trinuclear transition-metal complexes such as Re(3)X(9) (X = Cl, Br, I), with their uniquely featured structure among metal halides, have posed intriguing questions related to multicenter electron delocalization for several decades. Here we report a comprehensive study of the technetium halide clusters [Tc(3)(μ-X)(3)X(6)](0/1-/2-) (X = F, Cl, Br, I), isomorphous with their rhenium congeners, pr...
